It all started in February in Japan when our friends Kevin and Misty introduced us to a board game called "The Settlers of Catan." Kinda sounded like a creepy Dungeons and Dragons game, but it's definitely not. We spent weekends at their house playing Settlers and eating unidentifiable Japanese snacks shaped like french fries. Fast forward a couple months to Utah--A couple weeks ago we saw an ad in the newspaper for a Settlers tournament in Salt Lake at a store called Game Night Games, and I convinced Jay to sign up for it.Two players from two different tournaments go onto the real showdown at the end of June. 20 people signed up for this weekend, and more will sign up for next weekend. The two top players from each week will go on to the final match, where the winner will get the fancy $350 special-edition Settlers of Catan game (I guess some people would want that. Who knows.)
Today was Jay's tournament, and he went convinced he wouldn't win. But less than four hours later, he had creamed everyone in the room...Catan nerds and small mannish-looking girls alike. Which means he is onto the final round.
My favorite part of the day (Jay speaking to an opponent):
Jay: "Hey, is that your brother over there?"
Little Boy: "No, that's my sister."
Jay was the top player, and took first place easily. He was also the most attractive man in the room by far. Besides the two kids, the others were pretty hardcore Catan-ers and seemed pretty disappointed when they lost. As much fun as it was to watch four hours of Catan, the tournament organizer saved me and taught me how to play a game called Saint Petersburg. So I wasn't altogether bored.
{A shot of Jay in action in his first game}As the winner, Jay got tickets to the Gaming Convention (yikes...I can smell the dragons already) where Jay will play the game for the title...and become the ultimate Lord of Catan. If you haven't played the game, I'm sure Jay would be more than happy to teach you.
